UNESCO Creative City Network
About the UNESCO Creative City Network
Chiang Mai plans to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (a global network of cities with a strong focus and commitment to creativity and creative industries) and is in the process of preparing its application. This process was initiated by members of the CMCC Development Committee in late 2010 during the TICEF conference in Bangkok.
Subsequently, on February 3, 2011, the Chiang Mai Creative City Development Committee organized a seminar with Mr. Timothy Curtis, Head of Cultural Section at UNESCO’s Bangkok Office, to discuss how to join the UNESCO International Creative Cities Network at Chiang Mai University.
During this and subsequent meetings attended by the Governor and Mayor of Chiang Mai, it was decided to apply in the Craft and Folk Arts Category (cities have to apply in one of seven categories). UNESCO closed the network to new members and reopened for new applications in late 2013.
In late 2013, the Lord Mayor of Chiang Mai established a working committee to prepare the application. Creative Chiang Mai and several member organizations are providing support.
The annual deadline for application is late March. For more information please visit:
